Nobody really knows who invented the hammock, but we do know from where it originated. The hammock was developed in the region of Central and South America, including the Caribbean, over 1000 years ago. The hammock had a more practical use in ancient times than it does to day. Since the area of origin is in the tropics it makes sense that the natives would develop a method of sleeping that would get them off the ground, away from the dampness of the soil and the ever-present creepy crawlers. The hammock has had a wide variety of uses. For example, sailors traditionally used them on commercial and naval ships. A cocoon type hammock was used which wraps around the body, preventing a sailor from falling out of bed in rough seas and being injured. Hammocks have also been used in space. During the Apollo program, the Lunar Module commander and pilot slept in hammocks between moon walks. Those are some of the more practical ways it was used.
