Hammock: The place where leisure, comfort, and relaxation merge to satisfy our desire for serenity

Lay in a Hammock and unwind from the daily stresses of life.  Wander through Rustic Leisures store and you will be exposed to the 1000 year old tradition of leisure, comfort, and relaxation developed by Native Americans in Central and South America.   Dream your leisure time away in the comfort of a quality hammock, air chair, or lounger from Outback Chair

Where did the hammock come from and who was the inventor?  Nobody really knows who invented the hammock, but we do know from where it originated.  The hammock was developed in the region of Central and South America, including the Caribbean, over 1000 years ago.  The hammock had a more practical use in ancient times than it does to day.  Since the area of origin is in the tropics it makes sense that the natives would develop a method of sleeping that would get them off the ground, away from the dampness of the soil and the ever-present creepy crawlers.  The original hammocks where woven from the bark of the Hamack tree and the fibers of other plants.  Today hammocks are made from a variety of natural and synthetic materials all intended to add comfort, durability and ease of use.  They come in a variety of configurations designed for use just about anywhere.  There are portable hammocks you can take along when you travel.  There are those made for backpacking. Then there are my favorites, those made for lounging around the house, patio, or backyard.

Christopher Columbus is credited with introducing Europe to the hammock .  He brought several of them back to Spain from the “New World” after his voyages of discovery.  Can you imagine the look on his face when he first saw a local native lounging around in his hammock.  This had to look much more comfortable than the hard surfaced beds Europeans were sleeping on at the time.  All I can say is Thank you Chris!  I can’t imagine a world without my hammock.

The hammock has had a wide variety of uses.  For example, sailors traditionally used them on commercial and naval ships.  A cocoon type hammock was used which wraps around the body, preventing a sailor from falling out of bed in rough seas and being injured.  Hammocks have also been used in space.  During the Apollo program, the Lunar Module commander and pilot slept in hammocks between moon walks.  Those are some of the more practical ways it was used.  But enough of the practical talk let’s get down to the nitty gritty of what we believe is the real purpose of the hammock – RELAXATION!

Most people conjure up a vision of leisure, relaxation and down right contentment when they think of a hammock.

While you browse through our selection of hammocks visualize yourself  suspended above the earth, a gentle breeze strokes your face, not a care in the world – This is the True Meaning of Relaxation.
